Dairy Queen in Wisconsin Sparks Controversy with ‘Politically Incorrect’ Sign – Franchise Owner Stands Firm on Values
A Dairy Queen establishment in Kewaskum, Wisconsin, has found itself in the spotlight due to a sign proudly displayed in its front window, proclaiming itself as “politically incorrect.” The sign, which has recently gone viral, boldly embraces traditional greetings like “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Easter,” and “God Bless America.” It also expresses support for the American flag, appreciation for the troops, and extends a generous offer of free sundaes to military veterans on Veterans Day.
Franchise owner Kevin Scheunemann stands unwavering in defense of the sign, asserting that he hung it nearly four years ago to transparently communicate the owner and staff’s commitment to supporting God and country. Scheunemann explained that the sign originated in response to a customer’s complaint about Christian music playing in the restaurant, and since its installation, it has not stirred any other controversies.
The sign gained recent viral attention after a visitor from Oregon shared a picture of it on Facebook, expressing concerns about the potentially exclusionary ideals conveyed in the message. Although the original post was eventually taken down, it sparked significant online discourse.
While opinions on the sign vary, with some in agreement with its message, others have resorted to personal attacks against the individual who shared the picture and voiced their opinions. Nonetheless, local business owners have rallied in support of Scheunemann’s decision, asserting that customers have the choice to abstain from entering the establishment if they disagree with its principles.
Residents of the small community of Kewaskum appear to accept the sign without issue, viewing it as a reflection of the owner’s personal views. Dairy Queen, as a corporation, clarified that they do not endorse Scheunemann’s approach, emphasizing that the sign represents the views of this independent owner only. The company reiterated its expectation for all franchisees and employees to treat every customer with dignity and respect, regardless of their beliefs.
