Raising the Roof: Kels & Jay’s Tall Skoolie Home
This week’s featured Tiny House truly resonates with me. My husband stands tall at 6’6”, and when we first met, I was already living in my Tiny House. His visits often resulted in him bumping his head, and redesigning my home to accommodate his height wasn’t an option—I loved my house just the way it was! Now that we’re married, things have changed slightly, but a complete redesign is still off the table. If only I had known about him before building my house! But today’s story isn’t about my Tiny House. Instead, let me introduce you to Kels and Jay, a tall couple who built their skoolie home to perfectly fit their heights. How did they do it? They raised the roof!
Tour Kels & Jay’s Skoolie Home with a Raised Roof
I’ve seen a few skoolie home roof raises over the years, and they always look like a huge challenge. According to Kels and Jay, today’s featured tiny homeowners, that assumption is spot on. Raising the roof was the hardest part of their build, and they wouldn’t recommend it for amateurs. During their attempt, the roof collapsed! It was a terrifying moment, but fortunately, no one was seriously injured. Their determination paid off, and they eventually succeeded in raising the roof—an essential modification since Kels is 5’11” and Jay is 6’5”. Without it, living in a school bus wouldn’t have been possible.
Cost-Efficient Skoolie Conversion
Kels and Jay managed to save significantly by sourcing extra metal from a scrap yard. Impressively, they completed their skoolie home conversion on a tight budget of just $26,000, including the bus purchase price. That’s remarkably affordable, even by Tiny House standards. From Basketball Courts to Skoolie Courts
Kels and Jay’s love story began when Kels was in England playing basketball. Their shared passion for the sport inspired them to incorporate a regulation-height basketball hoop into their skoolie home. They can now shoot hoops wherever they park, storing the hoop in the back of their skoolie whenever they’re on the move.
